‘Paint, Heat & Recyclables’ are part of an ongoing Series of wall sculptures about my challenges with Macular Degeneration. A genetic blinding disease that is in my family history. Over the last 10 years it has become increasingly difficult to see clearly or with detail. It's a slow moving illness that robs you of your usable detail vision. My Retina Specialist describes it best: " is a devastating and life-altering disease that severely impacts my patients, limiting their ability to read, drive and see the faces of friends and family”.
The artworks are pieced together with recycled plastic waste products that are wrapped around a frame then burnt & sculpted using various forms of heat to create individual visual experiences. The interplay of light and shadow takes on heightened significance, becoming a language of emotion, depth, and suggestion. Rather than depicting realistic details, I use contrasts and subtle nuances to evoke mood, atmosphere, and the underlying narratives within each piece. Adapting to the challenges of Macular Degeneration has been a process of innovation and self-discovery. I embrace tactile sensations, auditory cues, and intuitive impulses, infusing my art with layers of meaning and emotion that transcend visual representation alone.
